Welcome To City Of Abbeville
About Our City
Beginning with the Indian settlements along the Ocmulgee River, to visits by explorer Hernando Desoto and later Confederacy President Jefferson Davis, the area we call Abbeville is deep-rooted in history. The majestic Wilcox County Courthouse stands as a testimony to our spirited community which was founded in 1857.
We proudly maintain our agrarian roots, yet welcome new economic growth and vitality. Our convenient location along U.S. Highways 280 and 129 make us easily accessible to major markets. The Heart Of Georgia Rail Road goes from the port in Savannah through Abbeville (which has a R/R Spur and a mile of side rails) to the Inland Port in Cordele and beyond.
In Abbeville you can experience an exceptional quailty of life, especially if you have hunting and fishing at the head of your wish list. Bass, Crappie, Bream and Catfish are pulled from the Ocmulgee River by excited anglers. Deer, Wild Turkey and game birds are natural natives of our area, much to the delight of serious sportsmen.
